ORTHODONTIC FAQS

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT ORTHODONTICS
WHAT IS ORTHODONTICS?

Orthodontics, also known as dentofacial orthopedics, is a specialized field of dentistry that centers on the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of dental and facial irregularities. Through orthodontic procedures, such as the use of braces or aligners, orthodontists work to align teeth, correct jaw positioning, and enhance overall oral health and aesthetics.

WHAT IS AN ORTHODONTIST?

An orthodontist is a dental specialist who has undergone two to three years of additional training and experience beyond dental school. This specialized training equips orthodontists with the expertise to straighten teeth, correct misaligned jaw structures, and enhance the functionality and aesthetics of your smile. With their in-depth knowledge and advanced techniques, orthodontists can create treatment plans tailored to address your unique orthodontic needs, helping you achieve a healthier, more aligned smile.

HOW CAN I TAKE CARE OF MY TEETH IF I'M WEARING BRACES OR A RETAINER?
  • Brush your teeth after every meal and floss at least once a day to maintain oral hygiene.

  • Opt for fluoride toothpaste and consult your orthodontist or family dentist about the need for a fluoride rinse to prevent cavities.

  • If you take out your retainer to eat, make sure you brush your teeth, floss, and remember to keep it safe in its container so that it does not get lost or broken.

  • Keep your retainer clean by gently brushing it with toothpaste or following the instructions provided by your orthodontist for soaking it in denture cleaner. Avoid boiling water or dishwasher usage.

  • Minimize consumption of sugary foods as they promote bacteria growth, leading to plaque formation and potential cavities.

WHAT ARE BRACES?

Braces are a common orthodontic treatment used by orthodontists to enhance the appearance and functionality of your smile. There are various types of braces available, including:

  • Clear braces

  • Ceramic braces

  • Lingual braces

  • Self-ligating braces

  • Invisible braces

  • Traditional metal braces

IF I GET BRACES, HOW LONG DO I HAVE TO WEAR THEM?

The duration of orthodontic treatment with braces can vary from patient to patient, as each smile responds uniquely to treatment. Typically, treatment times can range from six to 30 months. However, the average duration for standard orthodontic treatment with braces is approximately 22 months. Your orthodontist will provide a more accurate estimate after evaluating your specific orthodontic needs and creating a personalized treatment plan for you.

DO BRACES HURT?

Braces may cause slight discomfort as your mouth adjusts to them, but it is usually temporary.
